Welcome to the Wheels & Engines forum where we advertise upcoming photoshoots, provide advice on taking photos of various motor sport events, gatherings, etc and discuss photo opportunities in the local area.
New members may not be aware but we went to Gurston Down to photograph the British Hillclimb Championship. This is a form of motor racing where people are against the clock, one at a time, on a point to point track. It's much more relaxed than circuit racing. In 2025 our two "local" tracks are hosting the Championship on 24/25 May at Gurston Down, and 26/27 July at Wiscombe Park
Visiting my four year old grandson in Bournville over the Easter break (2025) and he insisted on dragging me along to the viewing area at the end of the main runway at Birmingham International Airport.
We were thrilled to witness a RAF Globemaster practice a series of three touch downs and go around again. This must have been scheduled into a gap in commercial air traffic.
I don’t think there are many airports which have public viewing areas directly under the flight path with people having picnics on a grassy bank next to the runway approach lights.
Here are a couple of images of the Globemaster and a Jet2 Holidays arrival.
There is an open invitation for members to meet up at Wiscombe Park Racing to shoot the Motor Hillclimb on Sunday 15th September
This is a scenic rural venue, with an interesting track, giving opportunities for action photos of motorcycle racing, people working in the paddock, spectators, moving motorcycles (and sidecar outfits)
Don’t forget that some members of Sherborne Bradford Abbas Camera Club will be heading to Portland Bill on 25th August to take some images of the powerboats as the head from Cowes to Torquay. We will meet along the coastline infront of the lighthouse any time after 9am. The race is expected to pass the bill after 9.30am.
Unfortunately this event was cancelled due to poor weather conditions. However it is an annual event so I am sure there will be another opportunity next year for anyone who is interested.
British Superbike Championship at Thruxton, 10&11th August. Saturday will be practice, one BSB race and support races (see BSB or Thruxton website), Sunday will have 2 BSB races and support races.
Haynes Sunday breakfast club on Sep 1st. The theme is 60s, 70s and 80s. See Haynes website - tickets must be bought in advance. A nice way to start your Sunday...
